Looks We Love: Kareena Kapoor Khan

March 21st, 2014

Kareena Kapoor Khan is a popular Bollywood actress who is no stranger to the silver screen. Since making her debut in 2000, she’s graced red carpets and movie premieres with her extraordinary beauty. Her first film, Refugee, was a war drama, but Kappor Khan brings plenty of drama to the fashion world—in a good way, of course. Let’s check out some of her best looks.

1) Black, Gold, and Ivory

black-gold-ivory

At Lakme Fashion Week, Kareena turned heads in a draped, turtlenecked sari that featured gold, charcoal/black, and ivory stripes. With dangly earrings, simple and muted makeup, and slicked back hair, her outfit is allowed to be the star of the show.

2) Bold, Bright, and Beautiful

bright-orange-royal-purple

Mixing bright orange with a rich, royal purple, setting it off with a white and brown halter top and finishing the whole look with black accents, this outfit is a stunner.  She wore this sari to the unveiling of her Filmfare cover, and we have to say, it’s quite lovely.

3) Magnificent in Magenta

magnificent-magenta-gown

Kareena made an appearance on Koffee with Karan,  and for the appearance wore a strapless magenta gown designed by Monisha Jaising. The draping and ruching on the gown accent the actress’ curves, while her simple hairstyle and diamond necklace show us a very Marilyn Monroe-esque look. Great!

4) On Trend in Translucence

transparent-top-floral-skirt

One of spring’s popular fashion trends is mesh—here, Kareena shows off a meshy, transparent top with a seemingly floral skirt – the bold print may just be splashes of color, but we sure think it looks like flowers. This carefree look, which she wore to Kunal Khemu’s birthday party, is one for the books.

Looking for a new way to accessorize your wardrobe and feel like a star at the same time? Add Indian fashions and jewelry that’s inspired by Bollywood films to your outfits! Take a look at the movie posters or DVD title covers and pick out pieces that are inspired by the colors and overall styling of the artwork, and you too can feel like a Bollywood star.  Check out some of our favorite ideas.

1) Ram-Leela

The cover art for this movie features a lot of gold and red tones, which makes it especially easy to replicate with jewelry sets from Saahil Exclusive.  Choose a set that is mainly gold with some red accents, such as this one:

gold-necklace-red-accents

This set features a thick gold necklace with red drop gems, and pairs well with the accompanying earrings, which are dangly and share the same red gems. If you really want to lock down this look, you can also purchase an outfit that is similar to the cover actress’ outfit:

deep-red-embroidered-accents

The deep red paired with embroidered accents will have you feeling like a celebrity in no time.

2) Om Shanti Om

 om-shanti-om-green-magenta

This film features a more playful cover, with a bright green background and shades of magenta, red, and goldenrod. As such, you’ll want jewelry that is a bit brighter colored. For instance, this necklace set in Gold/Firozi:

colorful-jewelry

This jewelry set is perfect for this look as it features multiple colors, playing up the cover art’s joy. For an outfit that matches the flourish and fabulousness that is this movie’s poster, check out something a bit more flowy, like this outfit:

3) Aashiqui 2

 asshiqui-dark-cover-gold-pearl
Going in a completely different direction, the cover for Aashiqui 2 is much darker and more sultry, with rainy weather featured and two actors in an embrace with the tagline “Love Makes Life Live.” So how can you use this as inspiration for your outfit? A classic, gold and pearl set pairs perfectly with this, especially with the teardrop-shaped dangles on the necklace and earrings.

As for an outfit that matches the sultriness of this film’s art, check out this dark emerald/teal and lace lehenga saree for a truly luxurious look.

The Sari Gets a Makeover

February 28th, 2014

In recent years, the traditional Indian sari has gotten a bit of a makeover. Typically, this garment is made with two to nine yards of fabric, and is wrapped around the waist and draped over the shoulder, exposing a bare midriff. They’re ideal for hot summer days in India, and are a popular piece of fashion for women. Modern saris, however, have gotten a bit of a facelift and have become a bit more contemporary and mainstream.

Modern Mismatch

Some of the styles we’ve seen have been described as having an “urban gypsy” feel—with overlapping yet mismatched prints, bright colors, and unique styling. Take, for example, this Anupama Dayal sari.

With its full skirt, stripes, embroidery, and other design elements, this looks like a sari, but not the kind we’re used to seeing.  It’s a unique take on a traditional look, and it’s gorgeous.

Slim-Fitting and Collared

This dark burgundy number by Pernia Qureshi is a bit of a departure from the norm. While it has familiar elements, such as draping and a bare midriff, the shape of this sari is a bit more streamlined than the typical look. With different textures of fabric within the same outfit, a monochrome silhouette is achieved, however the accents of embroidery and a high collar make this particular sari stand out from the rest.

Interesting Prints

Yogesh Chaudhary did a complete 180 with this look, turning crowd expectations on their side when presenting a brightly colored, unique-printed sari.  Bright blue, yellow, and orange are accented with ivory and black details, and the sari is edged with metallic gold. A looser blouse that covers the midriff has replaced the standard blouse. We could wear this look every day, couldn’t you? Or at least if we weren’t wearing it…we’d want to wear something like it.

Mix and Match AND Bold Prints

This look, from Nachiket Barve, is seriously intriguing. With a form fitting, wide-necked blouse topped off with stripes, tie dye, a multicolored trim, and three dimensional embroidery. There are so many elements that catch the eye on this sari, yet it doesn’t overwhelm.

Modern Trends with Classic Styling

Finally, check out this sari. Neeta Lulla is behind this look, which features classic stylings of the over-the-shoulder drape, but the blouse has a peplum look to it, a trend that’s been very popular over the past year or so. Long sleeves and darker tones lend a somewhat gothic feel to this garment, while still keeping the overall look restrained and alluring.

Which of these is your favorite? What’s your dream sari?

Best Looks from the 9th Renault Star Guild Awards

February 24th, 2014

Last month’s Renault Star Guild Awards, presented by Star TV and Renault, honored the best and brightest small screen and big screen stars. Salman Khan hosted this year’s event (as well as last year’s), and Bollywood stars including Shraddha Kapoor, Shahid Kappor, Sonakshi Sinha, and many more walked the red carpet. Winning Best Actor and Best Actress were Farhan Akthar and Deepika Padukone, respectively. But as with any other award ceremony, fashion took center stage. Check out our favorite looks from the event.

Classy and Cool

vihesh-bhatt-double-breasted-suit

Vihesh Bhatt turned up to the awards in a double-breasted suit and printed shirt, but what really stole the show was his lapel pin. A buttonhole flowerpin from Lanvin takes this look from basic to bodacious.  While we’re not typically fans of double-breasted suits, he’s pulling the one off well, and the suit is overall mostly well-fitted. It was easily one of our favorite looks on the red carpet for this event.

Gilded and Glamorous

kareena-kapoor-gold-gown

Kareena Kapoor stuns with this all-gold gown. Setting off this statuesque dress is a simple hairdo and a bold lip color for a look that was simply, classy, and sexy, all at once.  The lines of the darker gold accent the actress’ figure, as well, making this a unique and demure look.

Channeling James Bond

ranvir-singh-luxe-jacket-bowtie

Ranvir Singh appeared on the red carpet looking stylish as ever with a textured, luxe jacket and bow tie. The jacket is from Gucci’s pre-Fall ’13 collection, but we wouldn’t see a problem with anyone wearing this jacket out of season.

Metallic Elegance

tanishaa-mukherjee-gold-ensemble

Pictured here with her mother Tanuja, Tanishaa Mukherjee wears a long, flowing pale gold ensemble, shifting a gold look from body hugging to something completely different. We love seeing more traditional looks on the red carpet, don’t you? Tanishaa’s mother was awarded the lifetime achievement honor at this event.

This year’s big winners included the film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag,  which earned seven awards,  and Aashiqui 2, which earned 4. Stars honored included Salim Khan, Shraddha Kapoor, and Prasoon Joshi. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag tells the story of Milkha Singh, an Indian athlete who was a championship runner and Olympian. It has received positive reviews and performed very well at box offices. Currently, it’s the fifth highest grossing Bollywood film of 2013 in India. Have you seen it?

Our Five Favorite Looks: Deepika Padukone

February 21st, 2014

Deepika Padukone is one of the hottest Indian actresses and models around right now, and her fashion sense is stunning. Padukone, born in Copenhagen and raised in Bangalore, has three projects scheduled for a 2014 release—Kochadaiiyaan, Finding Fanny Fernandes, and Happy New Year. Aside from her professional life, though, we’re loving her style. Check out our five favorite looks of hers.

1) Black and White and Red All Over

For the Big Star Awards, Padukone wore this gorgeous, one-shoulder Naeem Khan gown, which despite being swirls of black and white, wasn’t too overwhelming.  She topped this look off with a slicked back, sleek hairstyle and bold red lips. Somehow, Deepika pulls off looking sophisticated yet funky all at once.

2) Black and Gold Elegance

At Amitabh Bachchan’s 70th birthday party, she went a more traditional route, wearing a black and gold, elegant and ornate churidar by Rohit Bal. Showing off her distinct style as always, she sets this look off with strappy shoes, bold lips, and this time, a wavy updo. Stunning!

3) Sunset Hues

Again in more traditional clothing, here she’s wearing a Jade from Karishma and Monica saree. With heavy golden embroidery on the edges and gorgeous pink, peach, and orange gradient hues all over, paired with statement earrings and plenty of bangles, she’s a vision. Deepika has been ranked the 29th most beautiful woman in Hollywood Buzz’s list of the world’s most beautiful women, and looking at this picture, it’s not hard to understand why.

4) Jewel Toned Lace

deepika-lace-cut-outs

We’ve previously mentioned how much we love lace cut-outs against bare skin, and this is no exception. At the 19th Annual Screen Awards, Deepika rocked this Dolce teal dress. Seemingly innocent at first glance, this gown is both short and long thanks to the illusion of coverage offered by the lace. It’s one of our favorite looks she’s worn—is it one of yours?

5) Turquoise Allure

deepka-dress-innocent-front-racy-back

Source: secretcloset.pk

This dress from Guari-Nainika looks innocent from the front but much racier from the back. The quasi-peplum look in front accents the actress’ curves, and her fabulous braid pulled forward keeps her back bare and hard to miss. A daring look, that’s for sure, but we think she’s absolutely pulling it off.

Top Tips for Valentine’s Day Fashion

February 14th, 2014

You want to look great every day of the year—that’s not surprising.  But on Valentine’s Day, when you want to impress your partner more than usual, there are a few things that can make your look extra special.  Check out our top tips to look stunning for your Valentine’s Day date.

Clothes

Of course, you want to look beautiful. So picking something to wear that flatters your figure is key, but it’s important to feel comfortable, as well. In other words, if you’re not usually the type of person to wear bright colors, this might not be the time to bust out a bright red mini dress. Pick something that feels like “you,” but dress it up a bit. Accessorize with a red or pink belt, wear a different shape of dress (A-line instead of sheath, etc.), or mix up the textures and fabrics of your outfit. Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel gorgeous. You can also go for a dramatic look by pairing a simple black top with a red skirt or pants, or wearing a bright pink dress or skirt. You don’t have to wear brights, though—you could also choose pastels or neutrals and, if you still want a spark, add a pop of color in your shoes or accessories.

Makeup

When you think of Valentine’s Day makeup, you most likely picture red lipstick. While that’s a popular choice, pink lipstick is also a great choice. Choose neutrals or fun, fresh pastel pinks and purples for your eyes—don’t use red, as this tends to make you look like you’ve been crying.  You can also wear metallic on your eyes, such as coppers and pinks, for a sultry look. One thing to remember about makeup is to always keep the look balanced – if you put on a lot of eye makeup, keep your lips neutral, and vice versa. Too much overall and you could end up looking a bit overdone or like you are trying too hard.

Jewelry

As for jewelry and other accessories, the sky is the limit for Valentine’s Day looks. If your outfit is over the top, though, try to keep your accessorizing a bit more simple. For instance, if you’re wearing something sparkly, big dangly earrings may overpower the look—instead, choose something a bit more subtle. Alternatively, let the jewelry do the talking if you’re wearing a conservative outfit. Like with your makeup, it’s all about balancing the look.

Low-Key Fashion at the Premiere of “Mr. Joe B. Carvalho”

January 17th, 2014

At last week’s premiere of the new film “Mr. Joe B. Carvalho,” the celebrities traded couture for comfort when they hit the red carpet.  The comedy starring Arshad Warsi, Soha Ali Khan, Javed Jaffrey, and Vijay Raaz came out on January 3rd, and was directed by Samir Tewari.

The film centers on Mr. Joe B. Carvalho, who is a private eye in pursuit of a challenging case that will change his fortune for the long-tem. He is enlisted to find a man’s daughter who has run off to elope. Through a series of intertwined events, Joe ends up looking for the wrong girl.  But enough about the movie—let’s see what the stars wore to the premiere.

Pictured here, Soha Ali Khan and Arshad Warsi pose with a third man, each showing off their casual-cool clothes. Khan is rocking form fitting denim with matching shoes and a star-print shirt with a seriously cool studded white leather jacket. She keeps the look fresh with her flowing hair and the uniquely styled jacket.  Arshad Warsi is similarly dressed-down, with a simple shirt and Nehru collar vest matched with medium-wash jeans. These two look natural and comfortable, perfect for a night of fun on the town.

Sharman Joshi also attended the screening, looking cool in saturated tones of green and navy, set off by sepia sandals. This look is proof that even when keeping things ultra casual, you can look pulled together, not sloppy.

Other stars at the premiere included Neha Dhupia, Saif Ali Khan, Soha’s partner Kunal Khemu, and Sandhya Mridul.  Check out Neha’s interesting look:

Dhupia wore an Isabel de Pedro dress, paired with boots by Steve Madden.

Dhupia wore an Isabel de Pedro dress, paired with boots by Steve Madden. This dress, which has pockets, looks a bit mismatched to us—the boots are a bit clunky for the look, but Dhupia looks great nonetheless. Still, a dress with a hemline such as this one should be the focus, rather than chunky shoes. What do you think?

Fashion Trends from Diwali 2013

December 13th, 2013

This year’s Diwali celebration has come and gone, but the memories of the parties and fashion have not. This year’s Diwali celebration started on November 3rd and went through the 8th, with fanfare all throughout. This year brought plenty of stellar fashion choices, so here, we’ll take a look at a few of our favorite looks as well as some of the trends we saw.

First, our favorite looks:

Wild Safari

This person went in favor of wearing a leopard and peacock-printed ensemble

Salman Khan’s sister Arpita wore this delightful sari to Sohail Khan and his wife Seema’s Diwali party. She took a walk on the wild side and bucked tradition in favor of wearing a leopard and peacock-printed ensemble. In this photo by Varinder Chawla, she’s shown chatting with Salman Khan and actor Suniel Shetty.

Beautiful in Brown

The earings and clutch make her truly stunning in this ensemble

Amrita Arora also attended Sohail and Seema Khan’s Diwali party. She went to the party with her husband, Shakeel Ladak, pictured here. Her outfit is a gorgeous brown, bronze and gold number with red accents, including her shoes and nails. Her earrings and Jimmy Choo clutch add an air of elegance with gold. She’s truly stunning in this ensemble—it’s nearly a shame that her husband wore ripped jeans to the event.

Not to Be Missed in Yellow

Kothari chose instead to wear an almost-fluorescent pantsuit with silver sequin edges and turquoise trim.

Stepping outside of what was more commonly worn during the festivities, actress Neelam Kothari wore a bright yellow suit with silver sandals that matched the suit’s trimmings. While many of the guests at the party were photographed in jewel tones and saris, Kothari chose instead to wear an almost-fluorescent pantsuit with silver sequin edges and turquoise trim. It’s an eye-catching ensemble and one that definitely made this actress stand out from the rest of the stars.

Other Trends We Loved

Other trends we noticed during Diwali celebrations were women wearing a lot of gold accented with red or emerald green details. For instance, cream colored saris as well as beige churidaar-kameezes were popular, especially with gold trim and red accents on the fabric and jewelry. Specially designed anarkali suits were very popular as well, with women choosing ones with asymmetrical hemlines or ornate jackets with grand details. The design as well as the length of the anarkali is what determines whether it’s appropriate for an elaborate celebration or whether it can be worn for any other day of the year.
